It is with great sadness that we announce that Monte Dolce of Buffalo, New York, passed away on March 9, 2021 after a long battle with cancer. The Monte Dolce Memorial Fund has been established by friends of Monte and the Dolce Family to honor his long career as a chef, caterer, and teacher of the culinary arts. The Fund will be used to assist local students who wish to follow in his professional footsteps. Please consider giving to this cause in memory of a great man who spent a lifetime giving to the community he loved.
Monte Dolce (1947 to 2021) was an energetic and passionate man that never strayed too far from a kitchen. He loved his family, was generous to friends and strangers alike, and understood that good food can bring a community together. As a lifelong entrepreneur Monte never stopped moving, but cooking was always a constant. From supplying fresh-baked cookies on the sidelines of his kids’ sports games to creating elaborate displays for culinary competitions, Monte’s cooking was versatile, purpose-driven, and delicious.
Monte learned his trade and the value of service at The Culinary Institute of America (1968) and while serving as Mess Sargent in the U.S. National Guard. Following his Honorable Discharge in 1974, he opened and operated Monte’s Pizzeria in Buffalo while working to establish his catering business. In 1983, he launched New York Caterers and Colonial Grove in Williamsville where he spent two decades hosting parties (including fundraising for the Romulus Club) and catering events of all sizes, earning a reputation for great food, service, and value. During this time he also moonlighted as the guest chef for special occasions at Fanny’s Restaurant and as a gameday sous-chef for Delaware North preparing meals for Bills fans. His food delighted countless taste buds and his kindness touched many hearts.
Toward the end of his career, Monte found inspiration in teaching his craft to a younger generation. He taught at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf in Buffalo from 2006 to 2008 and in Niagara County Community College’s culinary trade program from 2008 to 2016. Monte loved a good story and his excitement for culinary instruction was contagious as he would tell (and retell) stories about his students’ successes.
Monte was a devoted husband and father and an energetic teacher and local entrepreneur. He will be missed by his family, friends, and the countless Western New Yorkers whose lives he touched. We would like to celebrate his memory by establishing a fund to help those who share his passion for teaching and learning the culinary arts.
The Monte Dolce Memorial Fund will be used by the Dolce Family to provide:
· Funding for educational endowments at schools that Monte taught at or attended (Niagara County Community College, St. Mary’s School for the Deaf, The Culinary Institute of America)
· Establish memorial scholarships in Monte’s name for students pursuing degrees in the culinary arts
· Support for other community organizations or causes that are meaningful to the Dolce Family
Thank you for your love during this difficult time and your support to enable an enduring legacy.
