MONUMENT FOR THE 66th ID AND THE VICTIMS OF THE LEOPOLDVILLE

On the night of December 24, 1944, the Leopoldville, which had left Southampton that very morning, was transporting soldiers from the 262nd and 264th regiments of the 66th US Infantry Division to Normandy, to reinforce the forces present for the decisive Battle of the Bulge. Her route was stopped dead in its tracks just 9 km from Cherbourg when the German U-Boat 486 commanded by Lieutenant Gerhard Meyer torpedoed her at around 6 pm.

This tragedy claimed 763 victims, including 493 bodies never recovered, not to mention those who escaped and carried the trauma for the rest of their lives.

No monument exists in Normandy or France to honor these victims, or their comrades-in-arms who survived, or even the men of the 66th Infantry Division.

The Association MEMOIRE & DATABASE, after carrying out and publishing the French translation of former New York City police officer Allan Andrade's indispensable book, Leopoldville: A tragedy too long secret, originally published in 1997, wanted to go further.

That's why we are asking you today to help us set up this monument in Cherbourg, on the pier facing the sea. We have the backing of the various authorities and have sourced a stonemason. The monument will be inaugurated on May 6, 2025, in the presence of families of the victims, members of the Panther Veteran Organization, which also supports us.

To complete this project, which is so dear to us all, we need to raise 25,000 euros.

There is no such thing as a small donation: every euro counts in remembering these young souls, lost too soon.

Dans la nuit du 24 décembre 1944, le Léopoldville, parti de Southampton le matin même, acheminait les soldats des 262e et 264e régiments de la 66e Division d’Infanterie américaine en Normandie, en renfort des forces en présence pour la décisive Bataille des Ardennes. Sa route a été stoppée net à seulement 9 km de Cherbourg quand l’U-Boot 486 allemand commandé par le Lieutenant Gerhard Meyer l’a torpillé vers 18h.

Cette tragédie a fait 763 victimes, dont 493 corps jamais retrouvés, sans oublier ceux qui en ont réchappé et en ont porté le traumatisme toute leur vie durant.

Il n’existe aucun monument en Normandie ou en France pour honorer ces victimes, ou leurs compagnons d’armes qui ont survécu, ni même les hommes de la 66e Division d’Infanterie.

L’Association MEMOIRE & DATABASE, après avoir assuré et publié la traduction en français du livre indispensable d’Allan Andrade, ancien officier de police de la ville de New York, Leopoldville : A tragedy too long secret, publié à l’origine en 1997, a voulu aller plus loin.

C’est pourquoi nous vous sollicitons aujourd’hui pour nous aider à implanter un monument à Cherbourg, sur la jetée, face à la mer. Nous avons l’aval des différentes administrations et avons sourcé un tailleur de pierre. Ce monument sera inauguré le 6 mai 2025, en présence de familles des victimes, membres de la Panther Veteran Organization qui nous soutient également.

Pour mener à bien ce projet qui nous est si cher à tous, nous devons rassembler 25 000 euros.

Il n’y a pas de petit don, chaque euro compte pour se souvenir à jamais de ces jeunes âmes trop tôt disparues.
