Moolah for Doula

Lately I’ve been very honest about my situation and allowing myself to be vulnerable and honest about the help that I need. It has led to people helping to pay House of Living Colors members and artists, friends bringing me groceries and other delicious treats during Corona Virus lockdown, and friend providing me with significant bureaucratic help.

Now I come to you asking for support again:

As soon as I came to know of the services and support Doula’s provide for a birthing person, it became my goal to be able to have one in the event that I chose to give birth. As you all know, for a long time I thought I was unable to give birth, so finding out that I am pregnant was a huge blessing and miracle for me.

I am having my baby in Berlin, Germany, a space where it’s difficult to find the bare minimum of politeness in health care as anyone but especially as a queer non binary black human. Comparatively, in the United States (my country of origin) black birthers are 3 times more likely to pass away during childbirth, yet 60% of these deaths are preventable.  

In order to make this process as anxiety free as possible, I’ve chosen to protect myself from the unnecessary mistreatment by having a home birth, obtaining midwife services from a queer midwife collective  (which insurance covers thankfully!!) and receive birth training and support from a Doula.

Having a Doula in the birthing process is important to me as she will provide information on how to be more attuned to my body and developing baby, provide support during childbirth, and give coaching that will decrease the likelihood of having a painful birthing experience, and overall improve the perception of the birthing experience.

To have this support is such an incredible privilege and so necessary for any birthing person to be able to have access to. 

My Doula has negotiated a fee of 1500 euros plus 19% VAT, 285 euros. Therefore the total cost of Doula service is 1785 euros.
