Mooroopna Indigenous Community Flood Recovery

Hi My name is Michael Bourke from Wulumbarra an Indigneous Grass Roots led Community Organisation in Mooroopna , Victoria on Yorta Yorta country.

This fundraiser has been put together provide much needed support to Indigenous community members in Mooroopna , my Aunty Marilyn Saunders & her children and grandchildren, and cousin Kyra Cashion and 3 children under the age of 5.

Their family homes have both been severely impacted by the recent floods in Mooroopna that brought record breaking water levels into the town last week on Monday 17th of October 2022 .

Both have lost all of their personal belongings and have been forced into homelessness due to their homes both being Water damaged to the point of being unhabitable.

In Aunty Marilyn's case she is now forced to find a new home after her family home of 45 years has been decimated by flood waters which sat through her home for over a week.

In Kyra's case she has lost all personal belongings and those of her 3 young children. The impact on her home is that she is forced to move out as it has been determined that the house is beyond repair and it will be demolished.

Asides from losing all of their belongings, this places them both along with their extended family members (which equates to an impact on 10+ people driectly) now being displaced.

Finding new housing will be a great difficult challenge as there are next to no housing options where they can be rehoused in a region where housing shortage has been a crisis for an extended period.

Your support to the fundraiser will be able to support Aunty Marilyn and Kyra with economic aid to assist them with covering expenses with temporary accommodation for the foreseeable future and will also assist greatly in their purchasing of new items for when they may be able to find new housing.
