Morgan Hill Silveira Habitat Preserve Bat Roosts

Donation protected
Hi my name is Aerin Schmall from BSA Troop 730 in Morgan Hill. As part of becoming an eagle scout, each scout must perform an eagle service project in order to benefit a wider community and demonstrate leadership. I decided that my project would be to construct a bat roost after noticing the destruction of large habitat areas for numerous species besides bats for office spaces and manufacturing warehouses. I have always had an adoration for bats, not to mention their immensly positive impact on ecosystems as pollinators and pest control (especially those pesky mosquitoes!). This project will be located along a new extension of a walking trail and will serve to educate people on the contributions of bats, as well as provie a predator-free area to raise young.

The project will include 2 small bat roosts mounted on one pole, as well as an educational signboard located nearest to the trail and away from the roost. The project will be located in Morgan along the Lake Silveira Habitat Preserve, and the location was decided on in cooperation with the Santa Clara Valley Water District and Morgan Hill Parks and Recreation. Attached are links to the BSA eagle service project workbook, in which you will find descriptions of the project and phases as well as costs, and an additional document containing relevant figures for understanding the construction process. The funds raised will be used entirely to purchase supplies, tools, and materials, and all labor will be locally sourced volunteer work.
