Mossy Bottom - Irish Cottage Restoration Fund

Donation protected
Greetings from the wild west of Ireland!

My name's Daniel, and in 2016 I moved to a ruined hundred-year-old cottage on an acre of overgrown meadow in County Sligo. I've been slowly restoring it and turning the land into a self-sufficient homested ever since.

I currently sleep in a wee caravan on site - which is comfortable, though a bit cold in the winter months - while working on the cottage and land. I'm also studying Horticulture and Furniture Restoration at college, and share my journey through videos on my YouTube channel , in the hope of inspiring others to take a leap of faith and follow a similar path to a self-sufficient life.

Progress on the cottage is slow, but that's okay - I believe in enjoying the journey, rather than focusing on the destination - and I'm also learning as I go, which is a wonderful privilege.

I started this GoFundMe campaign in the hope of raising funds specifically for the bigger restoration costs. There are three areas in particular which it would be spent on:

1. Thatching the roof. This is one of the few jobs which I really don't feel able to take on myself, as it is so incredibly specialised, but it would be truly wonderful to give the cottage back its yellow hat after all these years. Estimates range from €20-€30K for the cottage.

2. A solar/wind-power system. I have a south-facing roof on a hill, perfect for solar panels, and I live in one of the windiest counties in Ireland. Renewable energy is the future - I already have a self-built solar system for my caravan - and I'd love to share the creation of a full system with my YouTube audience. This should be achievable for around €15K.

3. A rainwater collection and purification system. The cottage and land has no mains water pipe or well, but it does rain a lot all through the year. Purification is the tricky part, as I can't afford to get sick out here, but if I could make this work it would mean no buying bottled water (or plastic waste) ever again! This is likely to cost around €5K.

Any donations - however small - would be greatly appreciated, and every cent will go into the cottage. But if you aren't able to donate, please follow my journey on YouTube, as I plan on documenting the whole process over the coming years (including the failures... of which I'm sure there'll be plenty).

From me and Mossy... a huge thank you!
