Mother of Color

Mother of Color is the feature film debut of Mexican American filmmaker Dawn Jones Redstone starring Ana del Rocío . In a tumultuous world, a whip-smart community organizer and single mother of two dreams of running for office but constantly has to make hard choices between her kids and her career. When she’s offered the chance to interview for a position that could change everything, she begins receiving mysterious messages from her ancestors. Noelia senses that something bigger is at play as she works through a series of obstacles to get to the interview and follow her dreams.

It’s a small story with big messages about childcare, motherhood and healing from ancestral trauma. During the pandemic especially, people are coming to understand childcare as critical infrastructure that needs to be in place for society to function. Without childcare, all other work stops. We’re also in the middle of reckoning with over 500 years of colonialism that has traumatized so many. This is a film about how one woman, a bold, single mother of two trying to get to a job interview, might answer the call of our ancestors to correct the wrongs of the past and help heal our world.

After our last crowdfunding campaign on another platform ended, we started this fundraiser for folks to continue to donate. Now, after completing production, we are raising money to finish the film and pay for things like editing, sound, color, music, visual effects and scoring. We are thrilled to have a rough cut already and to be submitting to festivals as work in progress. Help us finish the film and tell this timely story!

We were recently accepted to an event called US Works in Progress in Poland , a European industry event where we'll have a chance to connect with distributors and vie for services from Polish production facilities that could also help complete the film. Money donated here will help us travel to this distinguished event.

There are special appearances by Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty and Luz Elena Mendoza of Y La Bamba. Produced by Tara Johnson-Medinger and Ashley Mellinger. Shot by Sean Conley. Edited by James Jones. Production Design by Vaughn Kimmons. Score by Jake Hull.

If you are interested in making a larger donation, we have a fiscal sponsor that will make those donations tax deductible. Donations through GoFundMe are not tax deductible. https://www.motherofcolorfilm.com/
