Moth's Top Surgery (Double Mastectomy) Fundraiser

Hey there! My name is Moth and I'm a transgender man (they/he) living in Australia. I've started this GoFundMe in order to try and help raise money to go towards my future top surgery - a double mastectomy.

Here in Australia, while we do have a public healthcare system, there is nothing in place for transgender individuals nor for transgender healthcare. There is no public waitlist we can go on to receive these life-saving surgeries. Unlike a lot of other countries, they are not covered by the government in any way, shape, or form. The only way to receive transgender healthcare in Australia is to pay for it entirely out of pocket.

I am disabled and while I am putting some of my pension aside each payday, it's not enough to cover the surgery. I have my surgeon picked out and have received an estimated cost of $13,775 minimum which is broken down as follows.

This is why I have set the goal to $5,000 - enough to help me out but not covering all the expected costs. I don't expect to reach that much, not by a long shot, but any donations and my own savings would put me that bit closer to being able to receive this necessary healthcare.

At the moment I bind my chest but, as I'm around an E cup, it's especially challenging. There are a lot of risks associated with chest binding, especially in the long term, which includes things such as restricted breathing and rib fractures. They are also known to cause overheating and, living in the Australian heat, this is especially true for myself.

Chest binding at my cup size also presents challenges of not making my chest entirely flat. This in of itself is harmful and triggers my dysphoria but can also put me in harm's way in public. Visibly having breasts while otherwise presenting as male makes me an easy target for hate crimes against transgender people. I'm fortunate enough to live in a relatively LGBTQI+ friendly area but even going out to buy groceries is not without risk.

Even a donation of $5, if you are able to spare it, would be appreciated more than I can express. Likewise, sharing this fundraiser in spaces where it is safe to do so would be helpful beyond measure. I would love for this and other necessary aspects of transgender healthcare to be on a public healthcare system like in a lot of other countries. But, for the foreseeable future, saving up (hopefully with your help) is my only option.
