Brief description

The HOPE Project was born from a fortunate meeting and unexpected friendship between Riccardo Pavesi, a development cooperator, Jorel Mouria Jouta, enthusiastic videographer, and Riccardo Raspa professional photographer and videomaker.

Their passion for environmental causes and outdoor sports met on the slopes of Mount Cameroon, in the country of the same name, were they went to investigate the particular history of this fantastic volcano, where an extreme sport event take place every year and joints effort from the Cameroonian and German governments and several associations ensure the management of the Mount Cameroon National Park.

The project aims to create a documentary film that explores the unique symbiotic relationship between the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope and the nature conservation of the Mount Cameroon National Park. This documentary will uncover the race's historical significance, its role in raising awareness about the park's biodiversity, and the economic benefits it brings to local communities. Through interviews, on-the-ground footage, and an engaging narrative, we will showcase how ecotourism and sports can contribute to the sustainable development of natural areas while addressing pressing environmental issues.

Detailed description

Mount Cameroon race of Hope is a marathon taking place every year since 1973 where hundreds of athletes around the world converge drawn by the race popular history and challenging terrain of the Mount Cameroon. With about 40 kilometres lengths and 3,200 m elevation gain, the Race of Hope is a rigorous test of endurance.

The Mount Cameroon National Park supports forests of exceptional biodiversity, economic and social value, as well as providing valuable ecosystem services. Among others, it harbors one of the last threatened population of forest elephants.

Our project aims to create a documentary film that explores the unique symbiotic relationship between the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope and the conservation of Mount Cameroon National Park.
Mount Cameroon's unique biodiversity hotspot and ecological significance make it a captivating subject.

Its diverse ecosystems, endangered species, and challenging climate provide an ideal backdrop to explore the delicate balance between conservation and economic development. Additionally, the involvement of local and international organizations and the Race of Hope's role in raising awareness offer a multi-dimensional narrative that combines sports, nature, and human development.

The opportunity for outstanding athletes to gain international recognition through the Race of Hope adds an extra layer of intrigue. Furthermore, the story has the potential to inspire other regions facing similar challenges to explore sustainable solutions through sporting events and ecotourism.

We believe that the “Race of Hope” plays a crucial role in the conservation of the Mount Cameroon National Park and the sustainable development of local communities. The race has actively contributed to drive interests to create international partnerships with organizations like the German Development Bank (KfW) and WWF to promote sustainable development by generating alternative opportunities to logging, poaching and intensive agriculture for local communities.

In essence, we believe that the development of activities following ecotourism principles can be instrumental in conserving natural areas while promoting economic development.

Our proposal use innovative approach to tell the topic of nature conservation and competition, and unique filming setting in the Mount Cameroon National Park.
Our story holds significance for multiple audiences: Athletes and Outdoor Enthusiasts, Travel and outdoor sport Lovers, Environmental Conservationists, Tourism Industry Professionals, General Audience Interested in African Dynamics
