Mountain From a Vole-Hill
Donation protected
By day I'm Cat from Finance - by night (and most weekends!) I am Lt Browne, Detachment Commander of Kirkwall Detachment, 1 Highlanders ACF having spent the last 8 years volunteering as an instructor with the Army Cadet Force.
This autumn, I had been planning a personal trip to Nepal to trek to Everest Base Camp. Having put that off for a year, I've decided to use the time off work to climb the only hill I've seen since March and raise some much-needed for funds for both our cadet unit and the local branch of the military charity SSAFA, who our cadets regularly assist with fundraising - unfortunately COVID-19 restrictions have prevented us helping either them or ourselves this year in the normal manner.
Starting on Saturday 12th September 2020 I shall climb Wideford Hill (225m) in Kirkwall 40 times over 7 days from sea-level until I've ascended the equivalent height of Everest (8848m).
On a nice day, a wander up Wideford is a pleasant and not overly long walk, however the real challenge here will be to continue to turn around and start all over again...another 39 times. Please give generously and help me help my cadets and our chosen charity.
The ACF gives young people aged 12-17 the opportunity to take part in a wide range of activities, achieving recognised qualifications and awards, and the opportunities for life-changing experiences such as adventure training in the UK and abroad, exchange programmes with other cadet units across the country, and the planned Battlefield Tour to St Valery, France - which 2 of our cadets are due to attend next year. Your donation will help us continue to provide these extra opportunities for our young folk, the cost of which can be exacerbated simply because of our location.
SSAFA helps the armed forces community in a number of ways, with a focus on providing direct support to individuals in need of physical or emotional care.
Addiction, relationship breakdown, debt, homelessness, post-traumatic stress, depression and disability are all issues that can affect members of our Armed Forces community. Many of these problems only become apparent when an individual has to leave their life in the Forces and join ‘Civvy Street’. SSAFA is committed to helping our brave men and women overcome these problems, and rebuild their lives. Your donation will help them to continue providing this support in our local community. (SSAFA is registered as a charity in England and Wales Number 210760, in Scotland Number SCO38056 and in Republic of Ireland Number 20006082. Established 1885. [phone redacted])
The money raised through your donations will be split evenly between SSAFA and the Army Cadets of Kirkwall & St Ola Detachments in Orkney.
