Move for Amara

Help raise money for Amara Kirk, an Escalante Middle School 7th grader who is undergoing treatments for B-cell ALL leukemia.

Set a movement goal, ask for online donations from friends and family, and on Saturday, April 25, Move For Amara!  Originally planned as a ski event fundraiser, the event was cancelled due to cornavirus.  Instead, we have decided to make it a VIRTUAL fundraising event to bring awareness to childhood leukemia and show Amara that we are all supporting her.  

What is the event? 

Choose an activity that you can do that will help you move either inside or outside (e.g., treadmill, stationary bike, soccer, yoga, dance, walk, hike, bike, run, ski), all in accordance with the “stay at home order” and select a time or distance for your goal.  Use this as an opportunity to do something fun together as a family while you are quarantined or solo.   Get people to sponsor you for your time or mileage (or just to complete your task). Share your activity on social media and use #skilikeamara and #amaramighty and spread some joy and awareness for childhood leukemia on 4/25.

You can make a tax-deductible donation to the Durango Purgatory Ski Team on this GoFundMe page who will give the proceeds to Amara’s family to help pay for their lodging/travel expenses associated with Amara's treatments at Children’s Hospital in Denver-ALL childhood leukemia, which requires two years of treatment.  A portion of the funds will also go towards childhood leukemia research to advance research into treatment methods.  

Childhood leukemia awareness:  On average ~3,700 children (under the age of 20) are diagnosed with leukemia in the US each year, representing ~25% of all childhood cancers.  Only 4% of all cancer research dollars goes towards funding childhood cancers.  While childhood cancer is rare, for the children and their families, it is life changing.
