MOVE MOUNTAINS FOR SANDI
My dear friend, Sandi Davis, is inspiring all of us with her courage in healing from first lung cancer and while recovering from that, experiencing a severe broken leg and knee. She now is working hard with physical therapy aiming to be able to put weight on her left foot by June, 3 months after the break occurred. She is determined to walk again!
In 2015, Sandi underwent surgery for lung cancer followed by both chemo and radiation completing this treatment June 2016. Her hero’s journey then became regaining her strength and vitality that she had always enjoyed. She celebrated her birthday in March of this year with her sister at the beach. Sandi felt jubilant that day as she was able to walk 2 miles! While walking at the beach, she lost her balance and fell on nearby rocks creating a trauma break to her left leg and knee. This was followed by an 11 hour surgery to repair her leg with plates and screws. After spending 2 weeks in the hospital, she returned home with a hospital bed, wheelchair and caregiver. Doctors allowed her to be home with a caregiver only as long as she put no weight on her left foot for 3 months. Her caregiver will be with her until July. Sandi is excited with the idea that she may be able to enjoy a daytime outing at Descanso Gardens soon, as this is one of her favorite places to enjoy and they are handicapped equipped. This will be the first time out of the hospital and house since the March accident.
-Sandi retired after 35 years when she was challenged with cancer. She lives on a fixed income.
-She is not yet 65 and so does not quality for Medicare. So her monthly medical insurance payments are $550.
-Sandi had to be transported 4 times with the leg injuries $2,000 per trip totaling $8,000
-Sandi will need on-going physical therapy in order to walk again. She doesn’t yet know how many sessions this may involve.
-Sandi’s caregiver at home costs $5,000 per month,
for 3 months totals $15,000
For many years, Sandi was on the ‘giving end’ of supporting people in all kinds of situations spending her time and money where they needed assistance. Her life included many volunteer hours at churches, zoos, public gardens and so many other organizations. This is the first time in Sandi’s life that she is now in the position of receiving. I continue to be inspired by Sandi’s courage to face these health challenges with determination, persistence and maintaining an amazing positive hopeful outlook. I can easily imagine that she will successfully climb this mountain too and be on the giving end again living her new life with vibrant health and enthusiasm.
Please give what you can. No amount is too small! Thank you so much! Marigrace
