Move the Shapiros to safety!

Hi, everyone. My name is Summer and I'm a single parent to an amazing teenager. We're both LGBT and active in the fight for human rights. We currently live in a part of our state that has always been dangerous for us but is becoming increasingly more so. In the last few months, we've experienced several incidences of discrimination, both general and targeted, including one in which I was intimidated by and followed to my vehicle by people who were armed, and a neighbor who openly speaks about violence to "our kind." We have individual friends but no community, here, and no way to build it. We need to get out and to a safer place as soon as possible. Our lease is up at the end of January.

Our plan is to move to a demonstrably safer part of the state for a year to give us time to save and plan for an out-of-state move. I have a fledgling business and good plans to help it grow but my top priority right now is getting my kiddo and me to a different, less dangerous location in time. I feel like all I can hear is the clock ticking. I want so desperately to be able to keep my child safe.
