Reuben and the Dark / Downie Wenjack Fund
Donation protected
As many of you know, a couple of the members of our band and a member of Nêhiyawak, the band that was opening for us on tour, were involved in an accident on the Trans Canada Highway last week. The van and trailer caught black ice and rolled into the ditch, hitting a tree on the opposite side of the road. We cannot express how grateful we are that no one was seriously injured. The vehicles were totalled and it’s a miracle that there were no other vehicles involved and that everyone walked away.
It takes a moment for these incidents to sink in and playing our last two shows, with Brock and Ian on stage, was truly a gift. We have had an outpouring of emotional support from so many people. Friends, family, colleagues and the press have also reached out to ask if they can contribute financially to the event. We are truly floored by all of the care and love we’ve received. While we wanted to avoid collecting money with all that is going on in the world, we have now been able to calculate all uninsured losses and for a touring band it’s a little overwhelming. The costs we cannot cover with insurance have amounted to $8,000.00.
It was our intention to make a donation to the Gord Downie and Chanie Wenjack Fund at the end of our Arms of a Dream tour. They are an organization that we support and believe are doing incredibly important work in Canada right now. Taking real action towards reconciliation and healing. There is a lot of suffering in the world that is greater than our own... so in an attempt to balance the support, we have set our goal to $8,000.00 and are committed to donating 50% of the final amount to them. We have been sharing our cover of the Tragically Hip’s song “Bobcaygeon ” on this tour, as an homage to Gord and his legacy work with the fund. Upon reaching this goal, we will write a cheque to DWF for half of the amount raised and the other half will go towards recouping costs incurred including flights, freight shipping, purchasing and repairing instruments as well as a new trailer. This is a nice way we can all come together now and feel it is the way we’d like to spread the love and support from all of you.
Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. It means so much to us having all of you beautiful people in our lives.
