Larry was born on October 13, 1938 in McPherson, Kansas and moved to Denver, Colorado in 1946 where he grew up to become a teacher at the Denver Unified School District. Larry retired after 45 years of teaching in 2004.Larry was a runner. He ran at least six marathons, including the Pike’s Peak Marathon which climbs over 7,815 feet to the top of the 14,115 foot peak.
In March of 1998, while training for competition in weight lifting at the high school gym, Larry made the mistake of lifting weights without a spotter. While he was lifting 295 pounds, he lost his balance and the weights drove him onto the ground crushing two vertebrae and damaging his spinal cord beyond repair. Larry became a paraplegic.
In 2002, Barbara started working out at the gym. She had noticed Larry, but never really spoke to him. However, while at the gym Barbara actually became inspired by Larry and the way he used the gym to help himself and others. Eventually, Larry and Barbara became friends and Larry began teaching Barbara how to work out without hurting herself. Larry started inviting Barbara on hiking trips and other outdoor events, including dancing.
Larry and Barbara got married in 2004 and moved to Houston, Texas where they have been living for the past 15 years. Today Larry is 80 years old and continues to work out at the gym 4 to 5 times a week when he is not hurting too badly. Larry believes it is still important to keep a good attitude and to keep your strength up.
Message from Snap Fitness Staff:
There are no words to describe the joy Larry brings to our club with his daily jokes he tells everyone. His commitment to his own personal fitness lifestyle inspires and motivates everyone in our health club to try to be even close as committed as he is to his own personal fitness journey.
We are raising funds so Mr. Larry can get a new sports wheelchair better better fit for his exercise program, and also, help towards his recent car wreck which was caused by wheelchair situation.
Let’s all get together and help this great guy, our friend.
Thank you all in advance.
