Windrush Veteran Appeal
Donation protected
We are raising £500 to ensure that the Windrush WW2 veteran has an inscribed book of remembrance, as a lasting testimony of his memory and contribution.
Ex-Flight Sergeant, Mr Peter Brown, from the Caribbean, served in the RAF in the second world war. He died alone in his London home last December and his story was almost forgotten as there are no known relatives.
Mr Brown passed away aged 96 but would have been roughly 17 years old when he joined the RAF. Notably, an article in The Times (2003) mentioned Mr Brown's training in Jamaica and Canada. You can read more about him and learn about his funeral arrangements under the heading ‘Funeral Service for Flight Sergeant Peter Brown’ using the link below:
Paul Sutton from W Sherry and Sons, Funeral Directors, also ex-RAF, never knew the Jamaican veteran. But, he contacted the RAF because he wanted to ensure that Mr Brown receives the honour he deserves as one of the last (possibly the last) West Indian members of WW2 RAF aircrew. Mr Sutton also posted on social media to spread the word and to invite veterans groups, the Caribbean community, and the public to attend the funeral on the 29th March 2023.
An estimated 10,000 people left their families and homes in the Caribbean to join the British armed forces, working behind the scenes and on the frontline. Some, like Mr Brown, settled in the UK and are known as the Windrush Generation.
Mr Brown bravely answered the call and battled for us; together we want to do this last battle for him. We're appealing to the public to help us raise funds to commission an inscribed book of remembrance, as a lasting testimony of his memory.
