Mr. Almeida's Class Goes to NYC!

Donation protected
For almost a decade, I lived and taught middle school math students in New York City after graduating from Georgetown University.  I used my own money to pay for full price tickets to take 3 students every quarter that had shown top academic achievement or progress to see a Broadway show because I believe so strongly in the power of the arts.   Now that I am back teaching in my hometown of New Bedford, MA, I would like to take all of my 50+ students to see "Hamilton," this season's critically-acclaimed Broadway musical written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and to the American Museum of Natural History to do some hands-on and experiential science investigations about how species have changed over time.  Will you help give my students this once-in-a-lifetime experience?

My students work hard in the classroom, and their results speak for themselves.  When I was teaching in New York at the KIPP Schools, my students were among the top performing students in the city and the state in math.  Back here in New Bedford, my Alma del Mar Charter School second-grade scholars ranked #1 nationally out of 103 schools on their final exam in math.  And last year at Keith Middle School, my students grew from the 44th percentile to the 90th percentile in New Bedford based on their final exam in math.  At year's end, 91% of my students were advanced compared to only 13% at the beginning of the year.

My name is Joseph Almeida, and I am a Teach for America alumnus, an America Achieves Fellow and National Board Member, and Student Achievement Partners Fellow and Core Advocate.  I have led presentations for state education leaders, superintendents, principals and teachers all across the country.  I have a YouTube channel with over 1.2 million views called "Math with Mr. Almeida," where you can find helpful videos for K-12 Common Core math standards.  I have appeared as a national television guest on CNN, "The Today Show" on NBC, as well as on MSNBC to discuss education topics.  I have also appeared in various national newspapers and magazines, and I am a featured educator in Steven Farr's book "Teaching as Leadership" as well as Paul Levesque's book "Motivation."  I was also Teach for America's National Teacher of the Year and won the Sue Lehmann Award for Excellence in Teaching.  In 2014, the White House featured me as an educator on its website.  This April, I will receive the 2016 Sontage Prize in Urban Education, a national award for excellence in urban education.

In my first 3 years of teaching, I took my fifth-graders from New York City to my alma mater, Georgetown University, in Washington, DC so that they could see themselves in a college setting seven years from that moment.  Your support to take my New Bedford math and science students to New York City would be greatly appreciated.  Will you help my scholars travel on a coach bus, visit the Big Apple to see the Broadway show "Hamilton," study actual specimens at the American Museum of Natural History, and get to eat lunch in Times Square?
