Ms. Dusty Hastings’ fight for recovery

My sis, Dusty, was in a horrible car accident & has no health insurance! She has been in a coma since October 15 with a broken back, neck, Subdural hematoma, now she a trach & feeding tube.  Dusty is not just my older sister, she is the aunt to my only child. She is a mother of 4 children of her own who are confused and miss her so much. Her kiddos wonder and ask every single day “When is mommy coming home?”. They don’t understand why they can’t see her or talk to her.

We have never lived with our biological parents, we were raised by our great-grandma who passed away when we were at the ages of 15 and nearly 18. She is the rock and foundation to so many people.

My sister has struggled financially her entire adult life and still selflessly spent her resources to rescue me from a horrible abusive situation. Not only that, but she opened her home and heart to countless family and friends in their time of need over the years. That’s just the type of person she is. She never asks for anything from anyone. So, I’m asking for her now. My sis needs our help.

On October 15th, 2020 Dusty was en route to San Antonio after spending a weekend on the beach.

It was late, and Dusty had grabbed a late dinner for the road, While we do not know the exact reason, it appears she did not want to eat and drive while in the dark, and pulled off to the side of the road to eat.

While eating, a young man who we believe had fallen asleep at the wheel, veered over two lanes and struck Dusty on the side of the road. It was a horrific crash, both the car and the truck were spun into the grassy median and the truck was flipped over. Massive damage was caused to both vehicles. The driver of the truck that struck Dusty’s car, was rendered unconscious, and was discovered outside of his vehicle.

A passerby noticed the wreckage and called in the police / EMT. When they arrived at the scene they were able to get Dusty breathing and call in a life flight for her. The driver of the truck declined medical treatment after regaining consciousness, and other than being shaken up, was ok.

Dusty arrived at the hospital and the fight for her life began.  Dusty had multiple contusions, a traumatic brain injury, not to mention a broken neck and back.  Dusty had internal bleeding and had to undergo surgery on her stomach. She also had a blood clot, swelling on her brain and had to have a shunt inputted to help relieve the pressure.  With luck and the grace of God she is not paralyzed, but that is only one of a multitude of obstacles Dusty has on her road to recovery. Dusty is FIGHTING everyday to get back to her babies. Through all of this, she still fights and holds on.

You see, Dusty has yet to wake up. While there are a great many positive signs, her brain still needs time to recover before she can be awake again. Due to the many struggles we have all endured because of Covid 19, Dusty has only been allowed 1 designated visitor for her stay at the hospital. Dusty has not been able to hear her children’s voices, feel their touch, or their spirits near her.

Insurance companies are only willing to do so much, we have faith the medical costs of the hospital stay might get mostly covered, however Dusty needs long term Skilled Nursing for her best chance at a full recovery. The hospital has made it clear that they need her to be moved out as soon as possible. We have applied for Medicaid for Dusty, but these things take time. As of this writing, Dusty has been declined at 100% of the skilled nursing homes that have been applied for. Every day that goes by, it looks more and more likely that we will be taking Dusty to our home for care.

Dusty needs help, We are doing everything we can to help her and support her, but we do not have the funds needed to get her the best care. The cost of the equipment we would need to care for her, or if our prayers are answered, she gets accepted into a Skilled Nursing home, are outside of our capability to provide alone. I know 2020 has been hard for so many, And I ask this only as our last resort. Please if you can, help Dusty. She never deserved this and we want to re unite her with her babies someday. With your help we can get the items or professional care needed to help her heal and wake up to us. With your help we can give this Fighter, this mother a real shot and coming back, at seeing her children grow, at LIFE again. Dusty has been so strong throughout this, she deserves a chance. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you. Thank you for reading this and if you cannot help financially, please help us spread the word. We want the world to know about this wonderful, strong woman, in her time of need. Thank you so much for your time.
