I am starting this go fund me for our dear friend Wettie Shannon. For everyone that knows Wettie, they will all agree that she is one of the most caring, compassionate, and selfless individuals they have ever met. She goes above and beyond to help the people she cares about without hesitation. The most precious and important person in Wettie's life is her only daughter Charlie. Keeping her healthy is her number one priority and I am hoping that we can assist in doing this.
Charlie has always been a happy and healthy individual filled with energy and optimism. Her welcoming smile and her genuine kindness is why people are drawn to her. Unfortunately, the past couple years, Charlie's health has negatively affected her quality of life. After countless doctor visits, hospital admissions , and Emergency Room trips, they finally diagnosed her with chronic Erythema Multiforme (EM). Although many cases of EM can be easily treated with medications and never return, Charlie has a very severe form known as Erythema Multiforme Major. This condition leaves her with painful sores throughout her body particularly in her mouth. These mouth sores prevent charlie from being able to eat or drink and lead to multiple hospital admissions for hydration and pain control. Her case is so severe that she is followed by a specialist in Philadelphia. All the typical treatment modalities for EM have been exhausted and unfortunately have been unsuccessful in controlling her illness. The one medication regimen that has been helpful is called IVIG. This is an immunoglobulin infusion that is given every month. This medication is very expensive and unfortunately it is not covered by insurance.
After many months of Wettie advocating for Charlie and speaking with the specialists and insurance companies, they approved Charlie for the IVIG infusions, however since her specialist is out of Philadelphia, they will only cover the infusion in Pennsylvania. This has left Wettie with no other option then to travel to Pennsylvania and stay in a hotel several days a month so Charlie can receive the three required doses of IVIG. The cost of travel, food, and lodging has really placed a financial burden on Wettie. She has been using FMLA while Charlie is getting her infusions, however her time has been grossly depleted and she will now have to resort to using out of pocket money to cover the expenses.
I am hoping that we can all come together and raise some money to ensure that Charlie will receive the appropriate treatment needed to improve her quality of life. This will also lessen the stress ,anxiety, and uncertainty that Wettie, Charlie, and those who care about them are experiencing. Charlie is a college student and her illness has made it very challenging for her to continue on her education path. With your help, Charlie will be able to recieve the necessary treatment, continue working towards her degree, and live a productive and healthy life!!!
