Help Save Mount Zion's Million Dollar Windows
Tax deductible
Want to join us in making a difference? I'm raising money to benefit Mount Zion Black Cultural Center, and any donation will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to us.
The windows in the 120-year-old Mount Zion structure are at peril. Ferocious winds are attacking them. The one destroyed in January is nearly impossible to duplicate with today’s technology. Two more were destined for destruction in March before being shored up. They must be a) removed, b) re-leaded and c) stored while the building is being rehabilitated. Once completed they will be re-installed.
Mount Zion is the “last” icon left standing in the city of Athens (OH) that was built in 1906 by enslaved Africans and free-born African Americans along a route of the Underground Railroad in this section of Appalachia’s Southeast Ohio River Valley. Others have been replaced by Historical Markers or “Plaques.” We trust this will not be the fate of Mount Zion’s stained-glass treasures.
More information about Mount Zion Baptist Church Preservation Society: We serve the residents of Southeastern Ohio by preserving the history of contributions made by the Black Community and by working to diminish racial, cultural, and sexual discrimination. We work to preserve a historically significant Black Church and the legacies of the Black people who lived and worked in the region.
