MOST RECENT NEWS: On October 21st, Darian exited his car, took two steps and heard a loud pop. At that time he realized that the metal rod in his leg was broken in half. He was sent by ambulance to Denver Health to discover that he will need an emergency surgery to repair his once again damaged femur. On October 22nd they performed his 5th surgery taking his damaged rod out through his knee, and replacing the area with the same size rod to keep the femur in place. Today we discovered that Darian will need another 2 surgeries to repair his femur fully. This Friday will be his 6th surgery to replace the smaller rod with a bigger rod and add another concrete block. Then in 4 weeks he will have his 7th surgery to remove the concrete block and do another bone graft as well as a plate. As you can imagine Darian's medical bills are extreme and any help you can give is gratefully appreciated.
Back Story:
On June 10th Darian Simon was shot multiple times in the back and in the femur with an assault rifle while walking his dog with his beloved Isabella Joy Thallas (may she rest in peace). Between June 10th and September 10th, Darian has endured 4 surgeries on his extremely damaged femur.
- The first surgery was to make sure that all of his inside organs were in tact from his gun shot wound to the back and to also attach an external fixator on his femur to stabilize what was left of his shattered bone/arteries.
- The second surgery was to insert a metal rod in his femur to stabilize the area and to also insert a concrete antibiotic spacer where his bone was essentially dust.
- The third surgery was to extract bone marrow through Darian's (good) femur on his left leg to then place it with a bone cadaver in the right (damaged) femur. The placement is the area where the concrete spacer was. This surgery was successful but overall not as impactful as we had hoped. A lot of waiting and hoping for the best through this time.
The 4th surgery was to remove his AK 47 bullet fragments that were surfacing the skin causing bruising/possible infection and the area was uncomfortable to touch.
Moral of the story: In the past 16 months Darian has worked very hard on gaining his leg strength back in physical therapy.
He was so strong, walking unassisted and doing well with many life tasks that had become easier.
