Medically Modify Karen's Car

My name is Karen Hosier.  I am a 63 year old proud mother of three phenomenal sons and eight amazing grandchildren.   I’ve overcome many health issues in my life, ranging from serious diseases to back surgery.  Unfortunately, eight years ago I had to leave my social worker position and go on disability due to the back problems.  Although I wanted to remain working a forty hour week, my body would not allow that.

Fortunately, I was able to obtain a position managing the apartment complex I live in,  which allows me part time work in exchange for rent.  I now live on the grace of God, plus SSI Disability which amounts to about $1000 a month.  I can stretch this money far enough to live comfortably.

My latest serious health concern is neuropathy in my feet and legs.  This condition began following my back surgery many years ago and has gradually worsened.  For a period of time I was diabetic, one of the serious problems I’ve overcome, but during that time I developed diabetic neuropathy.  Some of my nerve pain comes from the diabetes and some from my back issues.  I was diabetic because I was overweight.  In 2014, I lost 50 pounds and have kept that weight off.   My blood glucose tests are now normal.  Regardless of its origins, this chronic nerve pain has gradually overtaken my life.  I am pursuing every avenue for healing; from prayer, to essential oils, to cortisone shots.

I can deal with the pain and discomfort but now it’s affected my ability to drive.  I don’t feel safe driving and so I don’t.  This has hugely impacted my life.  I used to volunteer at my granddaughter’s school twice a week but now I can’t get there anymore.  I used to drive to Davis to visit my family there, but I’m also unable to do this.  The list goes on.  Losing my independence at this age is just not acceptable.  I have too much to give to remain housebound.

I’ve investigated alternatives for driving.  I've learned that I can have my car modified so I can drive with hand controls.  It costs about $3,000.00.  First, I need to attend a driving school and be certified as safe to drive in this manner.  Then, the modifications to my existing vehicle can occur. Now I’m on a journey of faith, believing that in time I will have the money needed to take the course and modify my vehicle.

There are days when I am ready to give up; to give in to pain, desperation, and fear of the future but then I think of others facing greater challenges than mine with faith, courage and grace and I rally.  I think of my kids and grandkids and I know they won’t let me give up so I press on each day.   I look forward to being able to pick my granddaughters up from school again, visit my family out of town and helping  others in situations worse than mine.  I look forward to maintaining my independence.

Any amount will be greatly appreciated as it all adds up eventually.  If you are uncomfortable with a public donation then you have the option of doing so privately.  I will provide regular updates on my progress, so check back to see how things are going.  I’m excited to see what the Lord will do.  Again for those of you who know me, you know my hope is in the Lord.  He will provide.  He may use you as a vehicle in providing for my vehicle.
