Much needed damage repair for Jamaican preschool
Donation protected
Hi everyone - thanks so much for taking the time to read this.
I have spent the last few weeks on a volunteer trip in Jamaica, where I have been helping out at a local pre-school in Oracabessa.
The Racecourse Early Childhood Institute provides vital care and education for children from 6 months to 6 years. During my time teaching here, I witnessed the school’s struggles - they are understaffed, severely lacking in teaching resources and desperately trying to claw back the 2 years of education missed during the pandemic, which hit the island of Jamaica especially hard.
On top of all this, the school is literally falling apart. It is situated on a cliff, and the sea breeze caused by the many tropical storms (I’ve already witnessed 2 since being here!) is damaging the building. It has caused cracks in the walls and the paint to flake off. The ceiling in the toilet is crumbling down and much of the paint in the playroom has flaked off, as you can see in the pictures below.
The school are unable to fund the repair of this damage.
However, there is good news… We can help!
By making a donation, you can contribute towards the cost of these essential repairs.
The total repairs will cost $1000; $600 for labour and $400 for materials.
The teachers at the school are some of the loveliest people I have ever met. They welcomed me into the local community with open arms. Aside from my teaching, I regularly hung out with the teachers after school, spending many evenings playing volleyball and card games, all the while whilst looking after some children whose parents couldn’t come to collect them until well after dark.
And I cannot forget to mention the children. They are all so sweet and full of joy, and incredibly eager to learn. They deserve to be educated in a safe environment.
It would mean so much to the children, the teachers and myself if you could make a donation - however big or small.
Thank you so much.
