Get moving with Munster Wheelchair Hurling
Who we are?
- Munster Wheelchair hurling started out as a Limerick based team called "Treaty Warriors" which was set up by two Limerick men, Dave Fitzgerald and Steven Casey.
- Today our club has players from Limerick, Clare, Tipperary and Kerry on the team and new players are always welcome.
- Wheelchair hurling is almost 25 years old. It was devised by a Kerry man, Tim Maher, who was a teacher in a school for people with disabilities in Dublin.
- The G.A.A. initiated a "Games For All" programme within each province and it has grown rapidly since.
- Wheelchair Hurling is played on a full sized court, with two opposing teams, each team consisting of 6 players.
- The only requirement to play is that each player must have a physical disability.
Why Have A Fudraiser?
- Due to Government guidelines Wheelchair hurling has effectively been cancelled since March 2020.
- Following on from our 2019 All-Ireland success, the aim for 2020 was retaining our title. Two training sessions into the new year, a group decision was taken on the 5th of March to take a two week break due to Covid-19 and by the end of March we would be back training.
- Fifty-five weeks later and we are no closer to a return to training or to competition.
- Our committee have worked tirelessly to ensure a smooth and safe return to Wheelchair hurling. This comes with a huge cost and we are taking on this fundraiser to alleviate some of the cost.
What is our fundraiser?
Fifteen of our players (Junior and Senior) are undertaking a daily movement challenge from the 1st to the 31st of May. We want as many of you as possible to join us on our "Making Miles Matter" Challenge. The top participants Km's on each day will be tallied and a table created.
We are encouraging all players, officers and families to get involved and we would ask that you do the same.
