Musica Spira's debut album
Donation protected
Dear Friends and Supporters,
We are very excited to announce Musica Spira’s debut recording of works by Isabella Leonarda and Maria Xaveria Perucona! These extraordinary seventeenth-century women created an impressive output of exquisite music within the walls of Ursuline convents near Novara, Italy. Since very little of their music has previously been recorded, your support of our project will help bring this music to listeners around the world for the very first time.
Isabella Leonarda held nearly every office in the convent and published more than 200 musical works, which earned her respect as both a leader and a musician. In fact, an important contemporary account at the time dubbed her “the muse of Novara.” Less is known about Maria Perucona’s life; she held offices in the convent with Leonarda and published a delightful book of sacred motets in 1675. We look forward to bringing these women’s works for sopranos and continuo to life for twenty-first-century listeners.
