Mutual Aid for Flood in Bangladesh
Donation protected
As Bangladesh faces one of its worst floods in the last two decades, devastating millions: this fundraiser— in collaboration with a grassroots, youth led group— is gathering funds for the continuation of mutual aid to those affected in Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Netrokona.
From my conversation with Sohanur Rahman, Executive Coordinator of YouthNet Bangladesh:
"Responding to flash floods in Sylhet and Sumanganj, our local youth volunteers are working at the ground level to distribute food and water targeting the 200 most vulnerable families initially; gradually, this support will be expanded to unreached areas.
Our current food items
• Chira 1KG- 80 tk
• Muri 1KG- 70 tk
• Energy biscuits- 60 tk
• Candle- 25 tk
• Bottled water 2L- 30 tk
• Oral saline- 60 tk
We are planning to distribute cooked food and set up a community-led soup kitchen in Longorkhana. Our current working areas include Sylhet (Kanaighat, Goainghat Jaflong), Sylhet Sadar, Companyganj, Dakkhin Surma and Sunamganj (Sadar, Jamalgonj, Bishamvorpur, and Tahirpur). Our new proposed areas include Kurigram and Netrokona.
Community needs
• Food shortage: Dry and cooked food, baby food
• Water crisis: Drinking water, jerrycan, water purifying tablets
• Kits for women and girls: Bath soap, underwear, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, reuseable menstrual pad set, washing powder, sanitary napkins, maxi, burqa scarf, sandals and torch light
• Medicine and oral saline
Support for volunteers
• Life jackets for volunteers' safety
• High power bank
• Torch
• First aid kit
• Communication cost support"
While the Bangladeshi government does have an action plan— local community members, volunteers, and youth groups are leading the charge with mutual aid— reaching those most affected by the floods, and supporting their immediate needs. Please donate what you can. #BangladeshFloodMutualAid
