Mutual aid for the NYC Mayan community
Over a thousand indigenous Mayan families from Guatemala living in New York are experiencing food insecurity as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Like many recent immigrants, they were already in a precarious situation before the COVID-19 crisis hit, working in low-wage jobs with little or no job security and no benefits, often in the informal economy or as day laborers. Now many have had their hours cut, or are unemployed and ineligible for unemployment insurance or stimulus checks. But a group of volunteers from the Mayan community are gathering food supplies and delivering them to families in need. Each week they deliver food packages to 600 families, but they need your help to continue, because there are hundreds of families that are still lacking the basic elements of subsistence. Every contribution you make can help feed a Mayan family, and help them survive this pandemic.
