mutual aid for various trans people
Donation protected
Recently, I saw a person on social media refer to their mutual aid as a "mutual fund," which is an entirely different concept, but it gave me a strange idea: what if there were a mutual aid fund for trans people in general? Something like an index fund, except instead of buying stocks for 500 businesses, you're giving to the livelihood of hundreds of different trans people.
To me, this idea seems like it has strong potential. Trans people tend to spend money on other trans people, so something like $50 a month for 200 people could lead to all sorts of wonderful art and music. I intend to focus the effort, especially starting off, on people who are in particularly dire straits, with a handful of others in the mix too. If this is successful, I might be able to spin it off into some kind of charity or benefit company.
I'm starting with $1000: that's $50 to 20 people, one of whom is me, and I am asking for a bit more than that with the hope of covering any random costs I didn't think of. If I don't need the extra $70, then it can go toward the next round.
I had a lot of luck raising money for a car recently, my new home for the foreseeable future, and I hope to repeat my success here (though the last fundraiser had the help of a very dear old friend).
A list of recipients is here on google sheets .
I'll have a website with more details later on.
To be crystal clear, this is not an official charity with tax-deductible donations. If it were, I wouldn't be on GoFundMe. Officially, you're giving money to me, Jessica Dark, for the purpose of funding mutual aid. Then I'll give it to these people. It requires a fair amount of trust, and all I can tell you there is that I wouldn't put my real name on it if I weren't serious.
Thank you for your reading.
