*This is incredible! We set a modest goal and have reached it! We still welcome any additional contributions people can make, so that we can help more people in need. If you would like to volunteer, check the update below to see how you can help.*
This fund was created by members of the Coalition to Defend the Lincoln Annex to directly help immigrants in New Brunswick who are unable to work because of the pandemic and are unable to receive any form of government assistance. We are prioritizing specifically the most vulnerable - single mothers, those sick with Covid 19, and the elderly.
Undocumented immigrants are not eligible for unemployment benefits, stimulus checks, and most do not have health insurance or paid sick leave.
With our fund, qualifying households will receive $300.
We originally were going to deduct the GoFundMe fee of 2.9% +.30 at the time of distribution but it's easier to give the recipient a rounded amount. At the end of the campaign we will deduct these fees from the total. (Note: When you donate you can change the tip donation to GoFundMe site to $0)
Prospective recipients were initially identified through our activist network (word-of-mouth) and their names were added to an assessment/intake form. As the fund grew, however, we started working with local grassroots community organizations and a non-denominational faith-based group to identify additional people who might meet our criteria. We are using an online "intake" form to screen recipients, and then volunteers follow up to assess the household’s needs.
We are prioritizing needs in the following categories:
- Food
- Medicine
- Internet and Phone
- Telemedicine Expenses
We are asking the recipients to write about their experience which we will share with donors here through updates. Our goal is to help those in need through an efficient, transparent process. Thank you for your support.
