ADA cabin and campground for the disabled.

My name is Helen Wright I've been a nurse since 1988.  In 2020 I was inspired by my mother's love for the outdoors and camping to create the nonprofit The Wright Place for Us.  Our mission statement is to enable the disabled to enjoy envelop all the scientifically proven benefits of camping and nature.  My mom was confined to a wheelchair after her leg was amputated due to vascular complications.  Consequently, she was no longer able to enjoy the cabins of her beloved Pymatuning State Park, in Andover, Ohio. In 2016, she passed away. After I put my broken heart back together. I decided to design a cabin and campground that would allow people in wheelchairs to camp independently.  However, I wanted to accommodate the able-bodied as well.  Just as I would have taken my mom while in her wheelchair to such a camp. I felt sure there are able-bodied friends/family, that would want to share a camping experience with a disabled loved one.  I found the solution . . . "Mixed-Use!" For example, the recommended countertop height for a person in a wheelchair is between 29 and 34 inches tall, a standard countertop height is 36 inches. The Wright Place for Us will provide countertops at both heights.  Modifications that provide equal access will be applied to the installation heights of sinks, cooktops, bathroom vanities, outdoor grills, etc.  This American Disabilities Act (ADA) "Mixed-Use" design covers the entire spectrum of abilities.

The campgrounds will also mimic ADA standards with wide smooth trails that wind through the woods to simulate hiking. Benches will line these paths so those that use walkers, canes, are elderly, or are winded can rest. One path will lead to a pond for fishing, a second to a treehouse with a handicap ramp, a third to a modified playground with modified equipment. The fourth path would lead to a fire pit and picnic area.

The Wright Place for Us will conduct all-inclusive day retreats for the economically constrained able and disabled children at no cost. these retreats will include the parents facilitating esteem building, teaching coping mechanisms, anger management, idea exchange, and games. The Wright 'Game' for Us was created specifically for this purpose as the game stimulates creativity, positivity, and vision. Once we are established, we will provide scholarships to teenagers to learn a trade in honor of my father who was a plumber.

To meet our fundraising goals. It will take a village. Donating to The Wright Place for Us will allow the disabled the opportunity to enjoy the same amenities of camping. All proceeds collected beyond the goal will go to the cabin structure, pave paths, treehouse, pond, and playground equipment. If you cannot donate. Please share. Thank you!
