Ending period poverty in Malawi through Tinapads

Donation protected
My name is Trinitas Kunashe, and I am a self-proclaimed ambassador to ending period poverty.

My goal is to make 250,000 reusable sanitary pads so that 25,000 Malawian girls will not miss one more day of school. I would love you to join me.

Each 10-pad kit will last 3 to 4 years for just 10 USD, guaranteeing that these girls will have a chance to succeed that the women in their families haven’t seen for generations.

My story and why I want to do this...

I am a proud Malawian lady and mother to a beautiful son. I live in Blantyre in the southern part of Malawi. I own my own business making reusable sanitary products and educating girls about menstrual hygiene.

When I was a girl, I lacked proper pads to manage my period and I used to improvise with old rugs. One day, one slipped from my underwear during class and it caused me so much embarrassment that I still feel it today. When I saw the same problem persisting two decades later, I felt these girls’ pain and I vowed to end period poverty. So i founded Tinapads, and we sew high quality, reusable pads with love for Malawian girls.

About 68% of girls from poorer, peri-urban and rural families in Malawi are unable to buy menstrual pads because their families simply cannot afford them. Now, after the second wave COVID-19 devastated the country, their parents, mostly grandmothers and single mothers, are barely able to afford enough food to keep their families alive with less than a dollar a day. Most of these girls had already been living in dire poverty, but now, they are slipping even lower.

Many girls use makeshift pads from old clothes or dried banana sheaths, which leak in no time, a practice which has forced many girls stay home for 4 or 5 days each month during their menses. As a result, these girls struggle academically, which leads to poor grades and eventually, school dropout. This problem has been on-going for decades.

Tinapads is here to end period poverty because we believe that low-income girls deserve to maximise their potential just as much as their male counterparts do. This is why we are calling on you--to help us keep these girls in school and on track.

Our goal is to fund 250,000 pads so that 25,000 Malawian girls can stay engaged and learning. Each 10-pad kit will last 3 to 4 years for just 10 USD, guaranteeing that these girls will have a chance to succeed that the women in their families haven’t seen for generations.

These pads will be sewn and distributed by Tinapads, my social organisation that has been supporting local girls for five  years through reproductive health education and pad provision.

We are a small, social enterprise, so every donation big and small brings a massive smile to our faces! Each one will go a long way to help these brilliant and talented girls. Please share this campaign link with your family and friends to help us reach our goal!

Thank you. With much love, Trinitas.
