My brother and cancer diagnosis of glioblastoma

My brother was just diagnosed with one of the most lethal, aggressive and rapidly progressive of brain cancers, glioblastoma multiforme. At just 50 years old his diagnosis is rare and his treatment will be tedious and lengthy. He just had surgery to remove 90% of his tumor because it is nearly impossible to remove 100% without causing more harm than good. Which is why he will need chemotherapy and radiation therapy to take care of the rest.

Rodrigo is not just my dear brother, he is also a great son, an unconditional husband to my sister in law, an incredible role model to my loving nephews, together they have two amazing sons, a 17 y/o and an 11 y/o teenage boy, he’s the sole provider of his family, and he’s also a very loyal and reliable friend to many. Those of you that know my brother can attest to his great big heart, his courageous spirit and positive attitude. His energy is so infectious that he can light up just about any room.

To say that Rodrigo has had a tough life is an understatement. He had to learn how to be independent at a very young age to provide for himself, earned his degree in engineering after many sacrifices, left his country of birth with a wife and child to unknown territory in search of better opportunities, worked multiple jobs just to get by, somehow managed to get his MBA for better employment opportunities and finally during COVID times was courageous enough to start up his contractor business from the ground up and has been successful up until of course he was hit with this very tragic new diagnosis.

My brother started feeling strangely odd and off about a month ago. A man of great intellect, with a fast ability to solve any mathematical problem or equation found himself unable to focus, was lacking coordination, unable to retain information and the first most eminent sign was not being able to play chess with his oldest son which was a mutual hobby of theirs. His wife noticed that he wasn’t able to eat appropriately and took him to the urgent care where after a neuro exam was told he was lacking certain motor skills, he was taken to get a CT scan, then MRI and and given medication to prevent seizures and shortly after was hit with this horrible new diagnosis that he as well as his family have to live with.

He’s worked so hard for everything he has and now the goals and aspirations he had for himself and for his family have been placed on hold with his cancer diagnosis, poor prognosis and a very lengthy road to treatment and recovery. As mentioned previously my brother is the sole provider to his family and now unable to work at least for some time, the cost of his medical care, chemo, radiation, physical, occupational therapy and the multiple medical regimens has placed a huge strain on the family’s finances. This of course as well as how he will provide for his family have placed and extra amount of stress and anxiety which are not conducive to a speedy recovery.

I know that COVID times, inflation, and just catastrophes worldwide in general have affected each one of us and our families someway. But it has also been a time which the strength of our communities and networks can make all the difference in overcoming life’s greatest battles. Should your circumstances allow to provide a little help, please show my brother that he has an entire army behind him, rooting for him, and assuring him that he is not alone and that he with his courageous spirit, his positive attitude and an entire army of people can beat this difficult diagnosis of cancer.

Mi hermano acaba de ser diagnosticado con uno de los cánceres cerebrales más letales, agresivos y rápidamente progresivos, el glioblastoma multiforme. Con apenas 50 años su diagnóstico es raro y su tratamiento será tedioso y prolongado. Acaba de someterse a una cirugía para extraer el 90 % de su tumor porque es casi imposible al 100 % sin causar más daños. Es por eso que necesitará quimioterapia y radioterapia para encargarse del resto.

Rodrigo no es solo mi querido hermano, también es un gran hijo, un esposo incondicional para mi cuñada, un increíble modelo a seguir para mis queridos sobrinos, juntos tienen dos hijos maravillosos, uno de 17 años y otro de 11 años. Es el único proveedor de su familia, y también es un amigo muy leal y confiable para muchos. Aquellos de ustedes que conocen a mi hermano pueden dar fe de su gran gran corazón, su espíritu valiente y su actitud positiva. Su energía es tan contagiosa que puede iluminar cualquier lugar.

Decir que Rodrigo ha tenido una vida dura es quedarse corto. Tuvo que aprender a ser independiente a una edad muy temprana para mantenerse a sí mismo, obtuvo su título en ingeniería después de muchos sacrificios, dejó su país de nacimiento con una esposa y un hijo a un territorio desconocido en busca de mejores oportunidades, trabajó en múltiples trabajos solo para salir adelante, de alguna manera logró obtener su MBA para obtener mejores oportunidades de empleo y finalmente, durante los tiempos de COVID, fue lo suficientemente valiente como para comenzar su negocio de contratista desde cero y ha tenido éxito hasta que, por supuesto, recibió este nuevo trágico diagnóstico.

Mi hermano comenzó a sentirse extrañamente raro hace aproximadamente un mes. Un hombre de gran intelecto, con una rápida habilidad para resolver cualquier problema matemático o ecuación se encontró incapaz de concentrarse, carecía de coordinación, incapaz de retener información y la primera señal más eminente fue no poder jugar ajedrez con su hijo mayor, que era un pasatiempo mutuo de ellos. Su esposa notó que no podía comer adecuadamente y lo llevó a la sala de urgencias donde después de un examen neurológico le dijeron que le faltaban ciertas habilidades motrices, lo llevaron a hacerse una tomografía computarizada, luego una resonancia magnética y le dieron medicamentos para prevenir convulsiones y poco después recibió este horrible nuevo diagnóstico con el que él y su familia tienen que vivir.

Ha trabajado muy duro por todo lo que tiene y ahora las metas y aspiraciones que tenía para sí mismo y para su familia han quedado en espera con su diagnóstico de cáncer, mal pronóstico y un largo camino hacia el tratamiento y la recuperación. Como se mencionó anteriormente, mi hermano es el único proveedor de su familia y ahora no puede trabajar al menos por un tiempo, el costo de su atención médica, quimioterapia, radiación, fisioterapia, terapia ocupacional y los múltiples regímenes médicos ha ejercido una gran presión sobre el y las finanzas de la familia. Esto, por supuesto, así como la forma en que mantendrá a su familia, ha generado una cantidad adicional de estrés y ansiedad que no conducen a una recuperación rápida.

Sé que los tiempos de COVID, la inflación y las catástrofes en todo el mundo en general nos han afectado a cada uno de nosotros y a nuestras familias de alguna manera. Pero también ha sido un momento en el que la fuerza de nuestras comunidades y redes puede marcar la diferencia para superar las mayores batallas de la vida.
