Alisha's Costa Rica Service Trip
Donation protected
Hello friends of the world and family!
My name is Alisha Watson and I am a senior undergrad at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Over the last four years of working towards a bachelors in pre-medicine and a minor in chemistry, I have made it my goal to take advantage of every opportunity that presents itself in this chapter of my life. As the first person in my family to graduate from higher education, I consider myself blessed, but opportunities haven't always come easy.
As some may know, I have been pursuing my dream of becoming a medical doctor for the last 4 years of my life. However, this dream wouldn't have been possible without my mom and volleyball. For my whole life it has been just my mom and I. I have watched her work multiple jobs at a time just to keep me in volleyball. The magnitude of her commitment was validated when I was offered a scholarship to play volleyball at a Division 1 collegiate level. I cannot thank her enough, as well as loved ones in our lives that have helped us along the way. The only way I know how to show my appreciation is to wake up everyday, play with passion, learn with enthusiasm, and act with purpose in order to achieve my goals. Because if I were to do anything less than that, I would not give my mom, my family, and myself justice for all that they have done.
My Purpose:
Aside from my career, as a person I strive to be a compassionate, respectful, humble, and most importantly cultured individual. As a part of the National Society of Leadership and Success I have been invited to travel to Costa Rica June 17th to take part in an amazing service and restoration mission.
There will be several major projects such as:
-Teaching at schools
-Renovation/constructing houses,churches, schools,homes etc.
-Caring for endangered monkeys
-Planting trees, and cleaning local beaches
-Exchanging personally chosen gifts from our culture to theirs
*The amount listed of 2,000 dollars will cover tuition, airfare, and legal/medical expenses*
What this means to me:
This trip signifies a number of momentous opportunities and changes in my life. First off I have NEVER been outside of this country! Which, by financial circumstance has made traveling internationally more of a huge aspiration of mine. I often say that the world is far too beautiful and diverse to not explore outside of our own culture. Therefore, this would be a huge accomplishment for me to grow culturally which will add to my sense of purpose in this life.
I have come to a point in my life where (between studying, finishing out my final commitments to volleyball, and applying to med school) I somehow have to conclude all of my college experiences and reflect on how they have molded me into the young woman that I am. Through my family, sports, and academics, I have learned to be dedicated, diligent, passionate, and strong-minded in anything I do. I believe this opportunity couldn’t have come at a more fitting time for me. As I am transitioning into a medical professional, with this trip I hope to encourage the passion I have for giving, caring for all life, and advocating for intercultural support.
Giving to others has always been a staple of operation in my family, which is why making this GoFundMe is quite difficult for me, because i'm not quite sure how to ask for help with something so significant and deeply important to me…-- This is a trip of a lifetime!! Trust me I know how much money is hard to come by, but if you would like to support me in this journey, whatever you donate with love will be irrevocably appreciated.
Thank you for reading if you've made it this far:)
Your support means the world to me!
