My First Trip to Senegal!

Hi, I am Sherese and I am a poet and interdisciplinary artist living in NYC. This year I received some good news that I received a writing residency from SeaSalted Honey for January 2024. This will be my first trip to the African continent and first trip to Senegal! I am excited and nervous, but I do feel this is an important trip for me to make, especially since some of my work (such as a recent poem I wrote about Benjamin Banneker) includes references to Senegalese culture.

For the not so good news: this year has been rough financially. A lot of the grants and other resources I applied for and hoped to received have fallen through and for this residency, I have to pay completely out of pocket. So I want to be honest and open up to my community for support. I am usually not great at asking for help, but I think its time for me to do so.

Whatever you are able to give would be greatly appreciated and for everyone who gives, you will be added to my list to see the works in process that I produce from the Senegal trip, including a Declaration piece called Return Key. The funds will go towards paying for the residency tuition and the flight. Thank you all ❤️
