My Hero--Robie Vandiver

Donation protected

Robie Vandiver is a father, husband, brother, cousin, uncle, and a great friend to many. The passions he loves the most are his wonderful wife Bonnie, his country, helping others and either working on or riding his Harley!

Here is some background about Robie:

Robie Vandiver was active in the United States Airforce from Feb 4th, 1974, to Feb 4th, 1978. He was promoted to Sargent in 1975, with a full-service commitment from 1973 to 1979. He was the Master Airframe Specialist for the RF4C, F4, CDEF, F111, and the F105 Wild Weasel Jets.

Fast forward to the 1990’s- it was discovered that Robie had "Muscle Sarcoma" cancer in his right thigh. The surgeons removed the cancerous tumor as well as radiated his thigh. The cancer was gone but the radiation took a toll on Robie’s mobility over the years. More to come about this.

In 2007, he had been in Bend’s Harley Shop looking at a 2007 Street Glide. It was called “The Patriot" Series, designed only for Veterans, active, or honorably discharged, and was a very limited addition, only designed between October of 2006 to February 2007. The salesperson, Sindy Merrell shared with him how the Oregon Veterans Motorcycle Association (OVMA) would be such a great fit for him. In February of ‘07 he became a member. This was the same year he went across the entire country for the “Run for the Wall” event, and since then has put 140K miles on “The Patriot” with 10 trips across the country! Within his time involved with the OVMA, he served as State President for 1 term, State Vice President for 1 term and Chapter President for 2 non-consecutive terms. He is now a retired life member, serving as a consultant.

In 2020, Robie was FINALLY going to have his mobility issues corrected in his right leg by the VA. But COVID-19 derailed the surgery and he had to wait until 2021. The surgery took place and at first the outcome looked promising. However, after a few weeks’ complications arose. The medical staff tried to correct the complications and with Robie fighting hard as well, he was shuffled between Portland & Vancouver for treatments. Sadly, the complications were too great and Robie’s right leg had to be amputated from the mid-thigh.

This where we can help Robie. As mentioned, he loves to work on and ride his Harleys. He is also quick to assist and help others work on their motorcycles. We are asking for funds to help modify his shop so he can alter his Harleys to ride once again. Also, the modification to his shop would allow Robie to work on his friends motorcycles as well. As you can see, Robie is a selfless man that is active in his community, state and country. Let’s help Robie to continue to be an active and giving person he loves to be.
