Hello My name is LaDana Duncan Johnson. I am Michael Duncan’s mother. I’ve been completely transparent while telling my son’s story in hopes that I can help other youth from making the same mistakes! If I can save one other child from bad company or making poor choices that not only do they pay for but their family does as well, it’s worth me telling my son’s story.
At the young age of 18, my son made a terrible decision and like a lot of youth influenced by the wrong company, he was incarcerated in FBOP for bank robbery for the last 12 years. On November 10th, 2022 while being transferred from one federal facility to the next, he was assaulted by the guards at FTC Oklahoma, beaten almost to death and as a result his life has been changed. Of course they attempted to cover up this heinous act by stating that he hanged himself! However several medical experts have confirmed that this was definitely not a hanging due to him having multiple injuries that are not consistent with hanging, such as no ligature marks, no spinal cord injuries, or strangulation in his eyes, etc., which during a hanging is almost impossible. What there was evidence of per his injuries consisting of bruises, cuts and scrapes all over his body, was him being choked and beaten by the guards as no inmates has access to him! Total disregard for his life by those placed in positions to protect our loved ones while they pay their debt to society! In addition, he was on life support for several days before the jail even notified our family of his grimacing condition. Once contacted we were told he was brain dead and should immediately be removed from life support! What the official’s didn’t expect was that my family and I would show up in Oklahoma on my sons behalf the next morning. Once I saw his condition I made my mind up that I wasn’t leaving OKC without my son. If I lost everything, I wasn’t going back to Texas without him.
During that time I prayed a lot, stood on my faith, and while other family returned home, I quit my job, and left everything and everyone I knew home in Houston, and vowed to fight for his release no matter how long it took. He was severely neglected before my arrival, resulting in a stage 4 bedsore and nutritional deficiencies resulting in malnutrition and him losing 65lbs in a three week period. With everything he was facing, he fought to live and God saw fit to keep him here. I couldn’t imagine living this life without him. For the the next 8 months, he remained in federal custody at a public hospital, then was transferred to a SNF in OKC. As a result, he did not receive the necessary treatment he desperately needed to improve his chances of recovery.
He has a Traumatic Brain Injury associated with Hypoxia (lack of oxygen) and can no longer walk, talk or do anything for himself. He has a trach, feeding peg, catheters and Ostomy and he needs assistance 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week. I am his primary source of care and everyday seeing him in this condition breaks my heart over and over. Whomever is responsible for this nightmare, has taken my only son in the element I knew him away from me, his son, and our entire family. In the future, he will need a lot of medical care, therapy, enteral formula, surgery, special transportation and many other things that are not be covered by his individually paid BCBS plan. I am fighting daily to help him get better. Honestly I hadn’t planned to make a go fund me. It’s hard to ask for or accept help when you’re used to being the giver but my son truly needs all the love, encouragement and support that he can get! All of the medical treatment, medication, injections, multiple therapies, transportation expenses, just day to day items is extremely costly but so important that I provide to help him recover. This is really challenging but the support everyone has given to my son and I have made things a little easier. Thank you all for the encouragement, love, and support you shown us! It means everything. We love you!
