My Paramedic Science elective in Kandy, Sri Lanka
Donation protected

Hi, I'm Kirsty and I am BU Paramedic Science Student BSc. In Summer 2026, I plan to embark on a medical elective hosted by WorkTheWorld in Kandy, Sri Lanka to aid my studies and to experience emergency medicine in a less developed country than the one that I am studying in.
In my degree I am fortunate to follow a mentor to complete over 1500 hours of placement in a variety of locations including on frontline NHS ambulances however I would love the opportunity to learn in a different environment to enhance my skills to become a paramedic.
I will be exposed to challenges that the healthcare system in Sri Lanka faces including lack of primary care systems and lack of emergency care mobile facilities. This will mean I can adapt my triage style to administer medical treatment in locations where I am based.
WorkTheWorld are an award winning placement provider who sustain fair, ethical relationships with partnership hospitals to allow integration between local staff and students/graduates. I chose Kandy, Sri Lanka, specifically as I have immediate family links to this town and would love to experience the welcoming culture again.
Why should you help me?
I am completing this placement outside of University time, therefore it comes with a cost which wouldn't be possible without fundraising. WorkTheWorld is a safe provider who reinvests profits into partnership hospitals in developing countries. The cost broken down for me to fund on top of the elective itself is as follows:
Flights: £1000
Visa: £50
Travel vaccinations: ~ £50
PPE & uniform ~£50
If you would like to help fund me to complete this elective then please donate any amount that is possible for you! Every little amount helps. I am aiming to raise £1000 but anything else will go directly back into the hospitals and providers that I work alongside.
Thank you in advance to everyone who has supported me so far!
