My Puppy's Double Cataract Surgery

Pablo - My Puppy

A little over a year ago, a 4 month old puppy named Pablo made his way into my life. This little white bundle, of crazy Siberian Husky joy, affection, playfulness, and an undying curiosity. I was his third, and final home. For the life of me I still can't figure out why his original owners didn't want him, he's the sweetest dog I've ever met. But I'm glad they didn't, because now he and I get to be bestfriends.

Well all has been great with Pablo for the last year, healthy, playful, and as happy as could be. That is until this past September.

It All Goes Downhill

One night, while relaxing on the couch, Pablo walked up to me and couldn't seem to open his right eye. After seeing his regular vet I was immediately referred to an eye specialist. There I learned that Pablo is developing cataracts in both of his eyes, along with an infection, and a possibly detached retina. All at just over a year old. That was like a sucker punch to the gut. He was in pain, and I felt helpless. The doctor said it was like he had charlie horses on both of his eyes.

We proceeded to treat him with an aggressive regimen of eye drops and pills, to bring down the pressure, keep his eye moving, and treat his infection. Since then, we've stayed on the medicines, but slowly tapered them off, and it's been working so far. It obviously hasn't restored his vision, but it's slowed down the progression of the cataracts slightly, and most importantly gotten rid of his pain.

Vision Saving Surgery

The vet has told me that time is running out to be able to perform surgery and fully restore his vision. The estimate for the surgery, which would be double cataract removal and the insertion of these stabilizer rings to ensure that his retinas don't detach, is $8,000.

And that doesn't include any of the medicine or the follow up visits. I know what you're saying, this is why you should get pet insurance, and I have it for him. However, they won't cover the surgery because Huskies are genetically predisposed to eye issues. Nationwide is not on your side ♫♫

If we don't do the surgery, he would remain on the medicine for the rest of his life. That is, until he inevitably develops glaucoma and has to have his eyes removed.

How You Can Help

While I would love to pay for this myself, I simply can't. This past fall,

with his medicine, and visits to the specialist, has cost me over $3,000. I'm 23, and graduated college last June, that $8000+ figure just isnt doable for me. So I decided to try this out.

If any of you feel it in your heart to help my Pablo keep his vision for the rest of his life, I would be eternally grateful. Any amount helps or even just sharing it with friends and family. Thank you!!!
