My Retired Service Dog Needs Cancer Treatment
Donation protected
Since I lost my vision when I was only a year and a half old due to a rare pediatric cancer called retinoblastoma, I can’t even remember a time when I didn’t want a guide dog. When all of my classmates were getting their license, I was applying for a guide dog. On July 15, 2014, my life changed forever. A fluffy yellow Lab/Golden came wiggling into my room and claimed me as his hooman.
While I could travel with a cane well enough, it doesn’t compare to working a guide dog. Walking with Thai felt like flying. Freedom. Independence. The ability to go anywhere at any time with this special boy who would always keep me safe. We graduated high school and undergrad together, and I couldn’t have done it without him.
Unfortunately, Thai’s working career was cut short after four years due to his extreme phobia of thunder and fireworks. No dog has ever tried so hard to keep working even though he was terrified, but there comes a point when every service dog handler has to put their dogs needs above their own. I couldn’t let a dog with such an excellent temperament just be a pet, so earlier this year Thai was certified as a therapy dog. He now visits people who are ill, disabled, or are having a tough time and brings them the joy only a dog can provide.
Recently, I got the news no dog owner ever wants to here. Thai has a high-grade soft tissue sarcoma. My floof has cancer. While the primary tumor was mostly removed, surgery is not curative. Without radiation, the tumor will likely recur and spread to other organs. Service dogs are considered medical equipment; this dog served as my critical medical device for over four years. How can I not give him the best medical treatment?
He is nine now, but he is otherwise perfectly happy and healthy. However, surgery and radiation will cost around $10,000. As a broke grad student and a person with a disability who has faced significant discrimination looking for part time temporary employment, I really can’t afford this. I know it has been a really difficult year and a half for so many people, and I would really appreciate any contributions. No amount is too small, and sharing this fundraiser is also appreciated. Please help me get Thai back to health, so he can continue assisting those in need. He has so much more life to live ... Help me save his life like he saved mine.
