My sister had TWO cars stolen this weekend.

Hi everyone!

My sister Carrie is among the most generous, empathetic, and giving individuals I have ever known. Ever since she was a teenager she's been involved in numerous environmental and social justice causes, organizing, fundraising, and volunteering primarily in Detroit. She lives with her two kids and her partner Jeff in Harper Woods.

Saturday afternoon, she was preparing for a benefit event for the community meals she helps organize, loading some supplies and cleaning out her 2007 Pontiac. She stepped away to grab something, and within moments the car was gone-- keys likely having been set on the seat in the rush. Detroit police found the car destroyed later that night, and towed it to be impounded (pictured above). To add insult to injury, she had to pay a fee of $75 to the city for the tow.

Unfortunately, the car thieves weren't done, because on her keyring was a spare key to my mother's 2007 Hyundai which Carrie uses sometimes and was going to rely on after the theft. The next day, in broad daylight, they returned and quickly drove off with my mom's only transportation as well. Carrie saw them getting in and rushed outside to chase them down, obviously to no avail.

Neither vehicle had theft protection because that's not really feasible in the Detroit area for older vehicles. (One vehicle, for example, had a current Kelly Blue Book value of $3,000, and it would cost an additional $3,600/year to insure for theft.) So both vehicles are simply gone. Although her partner Jeff still has a work truck (he was out of town this week), my sister's ability to drive and transport her two kids has been lost, and she can no longer pick up donations or supplies for the volunteer work.

Having one car stolen was hard enough. Having a second car stolen the next day, right in front of her, targeted by the same thief, has been extraordinarily stressful. They had to replace all the home locks since they also have those keys, but it's still very unsettling.

I've never done a GoFundMe campaign but am hopeful, if you're reading this and have some cash to spare, that we can help her family out together this week. Carrie has devoted her whole life to helping others and isn't comfortable asking for help herself, so I'm asking for her. With any luck, we can raise enough to at least help her purchase something basic to safely drive herself and my nephews around.

Thank you so much for your consideration!
