Hi folks, my name is Jo, and I need a few minutes of your time, please.
My sister is a cancer survivor and a fairly recent double amputee, who is still fighting for her health, well-being, and independence, against so many difficult obstacles.
This is her story:
My name is Caren, I am a 60 yo woman with 3 beautiful daughters, a young grandson and a wonderfully supportive family.
After our mother passed away in 2022, I started looking closer at my own health. It has been a domino effect of issues since then.
The first domino to fall, was my uterine cancer discovery in March 2023, which resulted in a Total Hysterectomy. My healing has been slow, as I am an Insulin Resistant Diabetic. I have struggled with my blood sugar and my A1C, which at times has been as high as 14, while on my insulin.
I am still dealing with cholesterol challenges which has resulted in a total of 3 stents being implanted. I still take several daily insulin injections.
Since the placement of the 3 stents, I have suffered 3 mini-strokes; all resulting in falls with injuries. The last stroke ended up putting me to the hospital.
As a result of the one of the falls, I injured the digits of my right foot, which was then complicated by my diabetes, I suffered a partial amputation of my right foot.
After that, I developed bone disease in my left lower leg, and had to have a below the knee amputation of my left leg.
I spent much of the first half of 2024 in and out of hospitals, nursing facilities and rehabilitation facilities. I was eventually released home and am now wheelchair bound.
This September I was diagnosed with cervical spinal stenosis as well as retinopathy. I now receieve eye injections and laser therapy,to slow the loss of my eyesight, and am anticipating several very difficult Neurological appointments, to address this newest health challenge.
By God’s mercy, I am finally home, living and continuing to heal. I am fiercely independent, so I am fast learning how to be self-sufficient in my newest circumstances.
I look forward to being able to drive again and taking care of my own needs as I work towards better mobility and self- care.
I need to update my current tub/shower combination, because it doesn’t provide enough room for my wheelchair, so a walk-in-shower is needed for a large shower chair.
This walk-in shower, will help mitigate the risk of further injury while I care for myself.
I have been able to make the down payment, to order materials to have a walk-in shower installed. While this will provide safety, more room and functionality, I still need assistance to pay for the rest of these expenses, and to help pay for the out-of-pocket expenses related to being fitted with a prosthesis for my missing leg, by the end of the year, which will be in excess of $7,500.
I have had a wonderful life, and God willing, I will be able to continue this journey to better health and independence.
I am grateful for any and all assistance that I may receive, and I appreciate your time and compassion. Prayers are always welcome; thank you so very much.
