MY SISTER AND BEST FRIEND KIMI
I am about to turn 60 this year, my sister 58. We have been best friends for life. We have been through thick and thin and have always been there for each other no matter what. We should have been twins we are that close.
It breaks my heart to say that my sister’s husband/best friend is dying of lymphoma cancer and kidney failure. It is hard to say how much time we have left with him. We have known Steve since grade school. He has always been there for Kimi even many years before their 25 years of marriage. Steve is and always has been her ROCK!!! They have both lived their lives with utmost respect and caring for one another and have never stood in each other’s way of happiness.
Kimi has always had an amazing passion for nursing! She has been a nurse for over 35 years and has helped so many people throughout the course of her life. She was with my husband and I in the delivery room when both of our children were born. I think it was mostly so my husband had support in case he fainted. Haha!
She has helped many of our friends and family with not only our births, but every other issue any of us would have. She was there at any time day or night. She has always been there for people she doesn’t know too.
Steve has had many professions, but building is his passion. He has been in the construction business most of his life. For the last three years he has been living his passion in building their small dream house in Northern Nevada. He built it from the ground up with only his two sons to help him. He even built a green house, a shed, chicken coop and a pigpen so Kimi can do her farming. He also has had chronic back and leg pain for the last 20 years, but still managed to build a house.
Steve also took care of helping to raise both of their boys. His profession allowed him to tote each one to work, then to and from school, games, etc. This allowed Kimi to fulfill her passion in nursing. Kimi also travels the country teaching disaster preparedness to first response people, i.e, firefighters, paramedics, nurses, doctors, etc. She is a huge advocate of education. It makes me so proud to be her sister.
While Kimi was starting a life in Texas after being born and raised in California, our dad was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer. We had always agreed Kimi would help take care of our parents in their older age and live near them. We just didn’t expect it to be so soon. So she uprooted herself and her family to move to Nevada to be with my parents. This was a huge hardship on her as she had to find a place to live, pay both a mortgage and rent while trying to find a job and take care of her family and our parents.
But they did it, never asking for a dime or any help along the way. They just made things work. The whole family pitched in to help themselves along with helping our 80 year old mother and who ever else was in need.
Their oldest son has just blessed them with a grandson. They live in Arizona. Their youngest son is putting himself through college in Montana for an engineering degree.
Two years ago, our brother got diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma Brain cancer that was so far advanced he didn’t not have much time to live. Two months to be almost exact. For those two months, my sister traveled to southern California to help take care of our brother along with his wife and myself. Again, she was there immediately and took time off work again without pay to help yet another person. The knowledge she has of taking care of people is something I will cherish my whole life. We could not have taken care of my brother without her. He was bedridden for 6 out of the 8 weeks he lived after being diagnosed. That was the most difficult time of our life.
And now, we are being faced with yet another horrible cancer diagnosis with Steve, her loving husband. This is now the number one toughest thing we have to go through. I guess when you get older these things happen more frequently. We have to be strong and will continue to do so.
Anything you can find in your hearts to help Kimi, Steve and her family get through these very difficult times will be so greatly appreciated. They have always given so much I feel they deserve a little in return. I can’t think of anyone who has done so much and asks for so little. Also I know many of you have a story of how Kimi and Steve have touched your lives so please feel free to comment and/or post photos.
Thank you thank you thank you
