Camps International Borneo 2025- Joe Cullen

Hi, I'm Joe and I'm fundraising for my community volunteering trip to Borneo in the summer of 2025. During this 4 week trip with Camps International, (a social enterprise who’s mission statement is to provide ‘ethical journeys with impact’ and aim to achieve all of the UN Sustainable Devlopment goals) I will be helping on community projects (such as building schools, houses, water facilities) in the heart of the Bornean jungle including: educating and spending time with members of the local community, going on a jungle trek and experiencing the Bornean culture all while using sustainable and recycled materials! Any donations (no matter the size!) would be very much appreciated!

Village enhancement projects

I’ll be getting involved in a number of projects to improve facilities for the rapidly growing population of Bongkud. Projects include constructing a youth centre, improving the drainage system to ensure cleaner and healthier living and establishing a community farming programme to improve food security and encourage self-sufficiency within the village, without needing to transport supplies from larger towns.

Habitat conservation

The Bornean jungle is home to a large majority of Borneo’s wildlife including orangutans, elephants and monkeys, and is one of the world’s most important natural habitats. However, it’s also one of the most threatened. I’ll get involved in activities to help protect this wildlife paradise for future generations by helping to slow down deforestation by planting new trees.

Community centre construction

Community centres form an important part of village life. A well-used and maintained community hall helps the sense of togetherness in rural communities. I'll be getting involved in a long-term project to construct a community centre for the local communities who currently do not have one.
