My wife has leukemia and is far away.

Hello, my name is Ken. My wife Nok and I have been living in Costa Rica for the past four years. She is from Malaysia. We met in Malaysia when I was working there in 2015. In 2018 we moved to Costa Rica, which has been my home for 30 of the past 40 years; I am originally from Chicago.

I have not had much luck getting a good job in Costa Rica, I am a 62 year old aquaculture biologist. I did get some short term contracts, and Nok and I ran a small food service business. But in reality, we were barely making ends meet. Two months ago, Nok travelled back to Malaysia to visit her mother, who is elderly and suffers from dementia. She had not been back to see her mother or daughter for 3 years.

Malaysia has a great health care system, and Nok was doing routine checkups when she was diagnosed with luekemia. She is about to start chemo therapy. We used all of our resources just to be able for Nok to travel home for the first time in years. I urgently need to travel to Malaysia and be with my wife. I need to be with her and take care of her. She is strong and we are optimistic that she will beat the cancer.

We don't need money for medical expenses, as this is basically free in Malaysia. However, we had to take on debts to get Nok's plane ticket. The money that we ask for will be used to pay some of these debts, and to get my plane ticket, as well as to be able to get by in Malaysia for a few months while Nok gets better.

I am in the process of selling our house, car and household goods, so that money added to what we are asking for will allow us to get by for a few months until Nok gets better and we can both work again. Of course, if I could sell the house right away, I would not have to ask for money here. But, it may take many months and possibly more than a year. We just don't have that time right now.
