Hi there! I’m Ian’s Mom, Michelle, and I want to tell you a little about Ian and his current situation.
Ian, at the age of 17, stepped in to help me and his 6 other siblings and be the man of the house when I decided to divorce & the situation was dire. He put off going to school to work full time at Kroger to help support the family and put food on the table. He did that for 5 years. He has always been a help to others and now he finds himself in need.
Ian was hiking in Tennessee with friends on Friday, 8/13/21 when he decided to climb up on some rocks. He lost his footing and took a fall of about 10-15 feet and landed on the trail. He kind of landed everywhere and thought he dislocated his elbow. He had just enough time to put he elbow back in place and stop the bleeding on his eyebrow when some bears got on the trail and his group scrambled back to their cabin.
Ian was sore and in pain, but thought he was ok. The next day, everyone headed back to Indianapolis by car. Somewhere on the road in Kentucky, Ian began to have a seizure in the car. His friends called 911 and paramedics came on the scene and decided he needed to be airlifted by helicopter to UK hospital in Lexington, Ky.
At UK, we found out that Ian had a 1.2cm brain bleed (contusion) and that is what they believed caused the seizure. He also suffered a broken radial head (the elbow basically) and had a fractured vertebrae in his spine.
And this is where Mom (me) found out that Ian had neglected to re-enroll for health insurance and was currently uninsured.
We were very lucky that Ian’s brain bleed was stable and it didn’t appear to get worse. We left UK on Sunday 8/15.
Of course, after a trauma like that, there is always follow up. We went to the orthopedic surgeon & found out that his elbow was in bad shape and he is in surgery as I type this. We found out it will likely require replacing his radial head with something artificial, which can be costly.
We don’t even know if anything more will be required with either his back fracture or the brain bleed, though we are hoping and praying he is ok.
I had hoped to help Ian with his bills but I think this is going to be more than any of us can handle.
Ian’s job requires two hands, so he has basically been out on unpaid leave, so he hasn’t had income since the accident. I’ve taken a heloc out on my house, Ian’s sister just got a second job to help him pay bills.
We need to raise money as soon as we can since the bills are starting to come in. The helicopter ride alone is $72,000. UK’s bill is sitting at around $32,000 and now we have this new surgery today and I don’t know what else down the road.
All funds raised will be used to pay medical bills and medical treatment . I am trying to advocate for him and get him discounts as much as possible but he is in that weird spot where he doesn’t qualify for Medicaid or insurance right now and the surgery couldn’t wait (I asked). I keep trying and having faith that God will provide a way. I also have faith in the kindness of humanity. Especially for someone who really deserves it, like Ian.
Ian hesitated on having me start a go fund me because he was/is embarrassed to ask and doesn’t think it will help that much. Would you please help me prove him wrong? Any little bit will help.
Also, I’m supposed to mention anything else we may need…due to the seizure, Ian will not be able to drive in Indiana for at least 6 months. If anyone on the north side of Indianapolis wants to volunteer to drive him to work (once he is able) that would also be a huge stress reducer.
Please help save Ian and thank you for reading our post. #helpian
