Our Mission
Myrna's House of Refuge is a natural "next step" in the ongoing ministry of Ms. Merline Grant. Because her faith has taught her to give of herself and to help others wherever she sees or hears of a need, Myrna is embarking on the next project that God has called her to create. Myrna's House of Refuge is a faith-based, not-for-profit organization, which has provided various forms of charity in both Jamaica and Chicago's South Side since its formation. Its purpose is to support and empower participants so they could experience healing and/or become self-sufficient.
Background
Beginning in 1992, while running the 'Hairsmith beauty salon,' on 79th Street, Myrna would regularly invite homeless people into her shop for free haircuts, hairdo's and shaves. She realized that the people she regularly helped were also hungry, so she started feeding the hungry at a location on 61st and King Drive. She noticed that some of the people she fed were in need of clothing, so she began donating clothing to them. Then she observed that after eating, many of her clients had no where to go, particularly women with children. That's how the idea of a house of refuge for these women and children was formed.
Support
We hope that all of you will become pledge partners in this endeavor.
All donations will go towards our mission.
