On December 14th, my Dad, Carlos E. Corona, was hospitalized after falling from weakness and hit his head. That night he tested positive for Covid-19. Like the hundreds of thousands of other front-line workers who have no other choice but to keep working outside of their homes to stay afloat during the pandemic, we believe he was exposed to a person with the virus at his workplace the week prior.
For the next three weeks, my dad fought for his life as he remained in the hospital after developing pneumonia as a result of the virus. He was on oxygen, unable to walk, weak, and extremely tired. He continued to endure all of his symptoms with resolve and a positive attitude.
He was finally discharged from the hospital to a Covid-unit in a Skilled Nursing Facility. Unfortunately, his lungs still too weak and unable to breath on his own, he was still on oxygen and continued to need 24/7 medical assistance and care. Thankfully in by second week of January, our prayers were answered and he was Covid-free!
On January 18th, my father moved to a Board and Care Home, where he continues to recover, but this facility is almost quadruple the cost of what he was paying in rent for a small room before he got sick with Covid. We anticipate that he will need to stay there for the next couple of months until he can live independently again.
My dad was working full-time up until December 14, 2020. In fact, he has worked consistently for over 6 decades, from the time he was a young boy. The fact that now he cannot return to work until he is fully recovered - if he fully recovers - is devastating to him, and to me, who has been assuming most of his obligations and responsibilities as his next of kin. Due to his recent Covid-19 diagnosis and resulting hospitalizations, he has lost the room he was renting in Ventura County, and now will need to find a new home once he is well enough to leave the Board and Care Facility.
I humbly ask for any help you may give to assist with his ever-growing medical expenses and temporary living arrangements at the Board and Care Facility. My father has worked too long and hard in his life to lose everything to pay for his medical care while he recovers from Covid. If we cannot come up with funds to pay for his facility bill, he will have no car, no money, nothing. We have already exhausted what little we had financially to keep my dad's bills paid thus far, but there simply isn't enough for him to cover these expenses for the next several months ahead.
I wouldn't normally do something like this, but turning to family and friends for this much needed support is a last attempt to save him from losing everything he has so that we can relieve some of his stress from the weight of his financial burdens and he can focus on his health and recovery.
Those of you who know my Dad can imagine how hard it is for us to be in this position, given his sunny, easy going disposition of facing life with a smile, even in the darkest and scariest of moments. He is determined to get through this chapter and continue living his life with the gusto and energetic love of life that he always has, but it is going to be hard. We are hoping that you can help us make it just a little easier. Right now we are taking it one day at a time and your prayers are also welcomed. No amount is too small, and any amount you give is truly a blessing. Thank you in advance for your support and for sharing.
And to any of you who have lost a loved one to this virus, my heart and sympathies go out to you and I am so sorry for your loss.
Please stay safe out there!
With gratitude and love,
Carla Corona
