All donations will go directly to the bail fund for the remaining detainees being held by ICE at the West County Detention Facility in Richmond, CA! This is an ongoing fundraiser, and the sooner funds are raised the sooner people will be free!
When activists successfully organized to end the jail's contract with ICE, 168 immigrants remained detained. ICE has full discretion to release people directly to their families, but instead they keeping people detained or transferring them to other facilities, making it harder for family and community visits.
Individual bail has been set at between $7,000 and $10,000 per individual, so why am I trying to raise $2440? As many of you know, on July 2nd I was arrested along with nine others engaged in civil disobedience in San Diego as part of the Free our Future Campaign against family separation, detention and incarceration on the border. I spent nearly 24 hours in jail, and was only released when our community of supporters rallied to raise nearly $25,000 to get us released, or $2440 each.
All prison is psychological warfare, and this was no different. We were required to ask permission to stand up, go to the bathroom, or move at all. We spent 24 hours awake, freezing cold, under fluorescent lights, unsure what would happen to us. Hearing my comrade's voice on the outside saying that people were rallying to raise our bail funds and get us out as soon as possible was a huge source of solace during that stressful 24 hours.
This experience is nothing compared to the indefinite detention and separation of ICE detainees.
