Hello, My name is Amei-lee, I'm a Black Native, graduate student at the University of Alberta. I currently live on the shared and unceded territories of the Kwantlen, Semiahmoo, Tsawwassen, Katzie, Kwantlen, Kwikwetlem, and QayQayt peoples. In a few short weeks I will be moving to Treaty 6 to start my first year at the University of Alberta in the Masters of Native Studies program. I've started this GoFund Me to help with tuition.
I recently graduated Kwantlen Polytechnic University with a Bachelors of Journalism. While at KPU I won four awards: Contributor Award: Community Reporting, The Runner (2019), KFA l’Ecole Polytechnique Endowed Memorial Award ($1,000) at KPU in 2018 and, Salvador Ferreras Family Award ($1,000) at KPU in 2017.
I was also on the Indigenous Student Council, and I was the Women's Representative from April 2019- April 2020. In the position of Women's Representative I organized a poetry event that highlighted local BIPOC poets, I also submitted a successful proposal to the Kwantlen Student Association to donate $15,000 to the Mauna Kea legal defence fund. I also worked at the Gathering Place.
In my final year at KPU I worked on the solutions focused, collaborative journalism project, Spotlight Child Welfare as a research assistant to evaluate the project, I also contributed a story to the project. I also was published as a co-byline with wonderful mentor, Jennifer Hardwick in alt. Theatre and Canadian Literature.
As a first generation university student any help to achieve my academic goals would be much appreciated. Please consider donating or boosting this GoFund Me, any contribution is mighty helpful.
