Help Nahla defeat Intervertebral Disc Disease! Urgent Surgery Fundraiser
Dear friends, family, animal lovers, and fellow opera and music enthusiasts,
I come to you today with an urgent plea for support to Nahla, my cherished miniature dachshund.
Nahla has been my faithful sidekick through thick and thin, countless travels, adventures, rehearsals and performances, for 6 years and throughout more than 10 countries.
However, she was recently (Thursday) been diagnosed with IVDD, a condition that reduced her hind legs mobility, and if left untreated, in her case, can cause paralysis.
I desperately need your help to raise $18,000CAD for not only one, but now two emergency surgeries as well as for rehab, all of which will give Nahla the opportunity to walk, play, and hopefully run once more.
Nahla’s Emergency Story:
Last Thursday, Nahla started experiencing severe pain and hind limb weakness and was very wobbly. I brought her to an emergency hospital in Echo Park, LA, California and there they gave us the devastating diagnosis of Intervertebral Disc Disease, or IVDD. They put on her strict rest and meds.
The next morning, I saw that her condition worsened. She could take 1-2 steps and would flop on her side. I thought one more day of rest and medication would help…
By Saturday morning, she couldn’t get up, and upon advice of a veterinary friend on the East Coast, who urgently told me that this means she has only 24 hours to get surgery or her chance of paralysis would get much higher…
She was barely feeling her toes anymore, so we decided to go for the surgery the same day, which with the previous vet bill, came to a hefty $10,000USD.
After the surgery was over, we were assured that she has 95% chance of full recovery, and also assured me that she was safe to travel back to Canada. I was also told that she should be able to move her back legs, although weak, but that mobility would come back very soon.
We took the red eye from LA to Toronto Monday night, and landed Tuesday morning.
By this morning (Wednesday July 19th), she has lost almost all mobility on her left leg. I called the vet here in Toronto and they told me to come urgently. After the CT scan was done, they sadly announced me that she would need another surgery…. Which can happen in 1 over 200 cases!!! The universe had other plans for our baby girl Nahla…
But I am writing this as she is undergoing her second surgery in less than a week, and I am in total shock. Today’s surgery is setting us back another $2500CAD (without complications)

But I will keep you all posted on her recovery. After tonight’s surgery (and hopefully final one), Nahla will be in strict crate rest for 6 weeks, and then physical therapy and rehab will start. This include hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, and laser therapy to maximize the chances of her walking properly again.

Finally, I just wanted to say that I am a person who seldom asks for help, because of my pride and the fact that I know I can get through tough situations by myself because of my past and because I know I am resilient, and Nahla is too. But… I am seriously in a situation where I realistically can’t get through this alone. I am grateful though to have had the support of friends throughout the world, and am extremely grateful for all the love Nahla and I received online. We feel your love.
